What to Stream: Disney's Highly Rewatchable Buddy Comedy 'The Emperor's New Groove'

Summary

The Emperor’s New Groove is a 2000 film about a selfish emperor who is transformed into a llama and gets his throne stolen by an evil antagonist. He goes on a journey with a kind-hearted farmer to regain his status. Disney cartoons like Toy Story have always been loved throughout numerous generations. Surprisingly, many of them underwent a vast transformation from their earliest versions. The Emperor’s New Groove also went through a big transformation from its original story. The production of this film began in 1994 as Kingdom of Sun, a South American version of The Prince and the Pauper. However, since it was on a shaky ground from the beginning, Disney ended up disbanding the original team and gave it to director Mark Dindal and writer Chris Williams. Dindal and Williams turned this movie into buddy-comedy-meets-road movie with Emperor Kuzco and Pacha, the warm-hearted farmer. Although these two might not seem like the perfect match, their personalities blend in with each other so well and create a perfect comedy team. Sadly, the studio didn’t know how to market this film. The movie was released with little fanfare and earned $90 million domestically, making it one of the studio’s lowest-grossing animated movies. Despite its low profits, The Emperor’s New Groove’s quick wit and high rewatchability make it perfect for home viewing.

Opinion

I remember watching this movie with my little sister on the couch long time ago. My sister and I thought this movie looked boring but once we started watching this film, we couldn’t take our eyes off the television. This movie has everything—family’s love, friendship, and humor. I think my sister and I watched this movie at least three times. It is disappointing to hear that this movie is one of Disney studio’s lowest-grossing animated movie because it is greatly underestimated.

Summary

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg answered questions from the crowd in a live Q&A. Questions were submitted through Facebook and he also took questions from the crowd present in the “town hall” style event. He talked about the features of Facebook that never saw the light of the day, accuracy of the 2010 movie “The Social Network,” Facebook and its “coolness,” and why he wears the same shirt every day. He stated that Facebook team once created a newsfeed that was very spaced out. Although the team liked it very much, it didn’t receive positive feedbacks from users so they had to take it back. Zuckerberg considered “The Social Network,” inaccurate and even found some of the things that they made up hurtful. The implication that he created Facebook to get girls when he was actually dating his present wife way before that bothered him very much. He moved on to explain about why he wears the same shirt every day; Zuckerberg considers fashion and clothes as things that are frivolous in his life.

Opinion

I watched the movie “The Social Network” years ago with my friends and thought that it was a true story. It’s sad to find out that some of the parts are made up because the real Mark Zuckerberg is not like the Zuckerberg illustrated in the movie. I would be sad and aggravated if someone illustrated me as a totally different person.
